historyMost children spend their lives trying to liveup to their parents expectations. Some, of course, could care less, but for the most part kids are trying to please their parents in order to gain some form of identity and self-worth. Dylan Bean, last of three sisters, has made this into an art. Partly because her father is one of Britain’s most famous former footballers and her life has been entirely up for show in the tabloids and on television - partly because Dylan is the type of person who needs to please others. From the beginning, Grayson Bean, head of the household and football star, has tried to pass on his name to a strong and gifted son. He ended up with Maxine, Jordan, and Dylan. His three daughters.
Even as a little girl, Max was too delicate for the trying life of sports. Like her mother Christine, she was of a petite and delicate stature with a quiet nature. She was sheltered from the media and grew up constantly hiding from the reporters and having her face blurred out from the tabloids. She’s currently a successful veterinarian up in Scotland, away from the watchful media eye. Jordan was second in line, and although Grayson had high hopes for his spunky, outrageous daughter, it became clear that Jordan was more interested in rebelling and chasing boys rather than trying to live up to anyone’s expectations. Then Dylan arrived, the Bean’s final daughter. Grayson was determined not to let his former glory die out with him, and put all of his attention on young Dylan.
Her life was a myriad of football games, movie premiers with her father, lacrosse practice, media drama, tae kwon do, and dodging rumours in the halls of her grammar school. Her father was doing everything in his power to make Dylan a star, whether she liked it or not. And Dylan, basking in the attention of her father and terrified of what his disappointment would bring, rose to his challenge.
There has been more than one time in which Dylan has wondered what her life could have been had she followed her own path, but she’d been in sports so long that it’s simply all she knows. She feels it’s too late to turn back now.
After awards and trophies practically began falling into her lap –because Dylan is truly good at what she does - Grayson thought it was time for her to make a change and take on new challenges in new places. Using their extensive football wealth, Dylan was sent off to St. Michel at age fourteen as a first year student. Again, Dylan couldn’t let her father down. His love and approval meant the world to her. Leaving all of her friends behind with more than a few hours of crying, Dylan departed for France.
Luckily, it wasn’t as difficult to make friends as Dylan had anticipated. The fandom for Dylan’s father was less here, and most people didn’t seem to care who she was; though there was always the asking for her dad’s autograph or other silly things like that. Otherwise, Dylan’s sweet nature and goofy personality made it less painful to create a new group of friends – most of them males. Dylan joined the girl’s lacrosse team and felt a sense of camaraderie there as well, though not nearly as strong. Even at age seventeen, Dylan is still a target for bullies. Being indirectly famous is one thing, but coming off as overly hard-working and committed to being the best can rub off badly on particularly insecure, nasty people. All in all, Dylan has managed to find some sort of awkward niche in St. Michel.
But what does her father have in mind for her future? Signing her to a women’s football team; possibly in America where women’s football is better appreciated. Another move, another life to begin. When will the pushing and shoving end?
if you could be anywhere, where would you be? “...Ice cream parlour?”
