historyTimothy Charles Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke and Elizabeth Anne Scott announce birth of first son.
The Hon. Torquil Francis Montagu-Scott was born yesterday at the family seat in Dorset weighing a healthy 7lbs 10oz. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing well. ‘
SO that was it. My grand entrance into the world – an announcement in the following day’s newspapers and a new entry into the peerage of Great Britain. This also marks the outcome of one of the few occasions when my parents spent the night in the same room as one another – one more being the evening that preceded the birth of my younger brother. The union of Timothy and Elizabeth was most definitely something of convenience rather than of love – an arrangement made by two prestigious families. At the time of my birth, my paternal grandfather was the Earl of Sandwich – an ancestor being the same Earl giving his name to the lunch people so enjoy – while my maternal grandfather was the Marques of Queensbury – his grandfather being the same man to officiate boxing rules and play a part in the downfall of Oscar Wilde. Joining those two families with the union of my parents was apparently too good an opportunity to miss. Know this, however – I have long been resolved to never find myself in a similar situation. While I appreciate that I have my own role to play within the family, being trapped with someone I don’t love isn’t a state of affairs I am willing to be in.
‘Torquil is an inquisitive and astute student and a popular member of the class. He has shown an early aptitude in literacy, though he is also progressing well in numeracy. His motor development is above average, something that has become particularly apparent as our physical education sessions have increased in challenge. It is my view that he will make a valuable contribution to his Year One class. – School Report, Reception Year’
The obligatory school report of Torquil age 5. Though the reports in the intervening years have become more detailed in their descriptions of my strengths and weaknesses, the information provided is much the same. I'm still inquisitive. I'm still astute. I've also been called cocky on more than one occasion so perhaps that should be mentioned too. Literature is still my preferred subject, the degree I’m working towards one I expect to achieve the highest grade in. My skills at mathematics are still distinctly average, the subject one I was looking forward to leaving behind with my GCSE's. Sports are still where I excel, though that is more on the polo field these days rather than in the school gym.

11th Earl of Sandwich dies, age76
Following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, William Francis Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich, passed away at the weekend surrounded by his family in the family seat at Mapperton. He will be sorely missed. Timothy Charles Montagu, the Earl’s eldest son, succeeds his father in becoming the 12th Earl of Sandwich, while Timothy’s eldest son, The Hon. Torquil Montagu-Scott, in turn becomes the Viscount Hinchingbrooke..
We all knew that it was going to happen. We’d been waiting for it for a number of years, though I was only young at the time. But it didn’t make things any easier to deal with. Father was, understandably, devastated. It isn’t easy for a young boy to watch his father – someone so strong, so in control – be upset and utterly at a loss like that. My grandfather’s death also brought a new dimension into the family. Father had new roles and responsibilities to attend to – not least his seat in the House of Lords – meaning that he was absent from home more than he had been previously. Grandfather’s death was also the first time I fully appreciated my standing in life. That was my name in print – I was the Viscount Hinchingbrooke – and one day I would become the 13th Earl of Sandwich. I would have a new role, but one so carefully planned out over time that I would fit into it seamlessly. Life, more than ever, was there to be enjoyed, and no amount of badgering was going to get me to do anything I didn’t want to do. Still won’t.

Polo Club has new star
Vaux Park Polo Club celebrates a championship win today against rivals Orchard Polo Club. In his fourth season with the team, and his first riding in position 3, Torquil Montagu-Scott – Monty to his teammates – proved to be invaluable, precision riding and flawless passes allowing Robert Henage and Alistair Carey, 1 and 2 respectively, to keep the goal tally rising. Lord Hinchingbrooke is currently in his first year at the prestigious Academie d’Ouvrard, following in the footsteps of both his father and his grandfather where he is sure to prove just as invaluable to the school polo team.
There are few things in this world that I find myself being at all passionate about. Polo is almost the sum total of it. I have often been accused of being too laid back and noncommittal about things and that is something I won't dispute. I invariably can't see the point in getting wound up. Polo is the exception. It is when my competitive streak is really allowed to shine. It is when my confidence -already brimful - can run wild. There's no feeling quite like it.
if you could be anywhere, where would you be? If I could be anywhere? The Guards Polo Club playing at the Cartier International.
